The reasons we use dowel rods

Before we get into why we use dowel rods today, let’s see what benefits ideal postures bring to us.

Ideal postures:

  • Improve breathing mechanics

  • Flatten and tightens your abdominal musculature

  • Look physically more attractive

  • Balance muscular and skeletal systems that protect body supporting structures

  • Prevent injuries or postural deformity

  • Allow muscles to function most efficiently

  • Eliminate chronic and joint pain

  • Improve gut health

  • Reduce stress

  • Increase work productivity

  • And more

In TAO Movement, postural correction is our specialty. When clients come to us, the first thing we do is postural assessment which allows us to identify any muscle imbalance/postural syndromes. Doing so helps us recognize the root causes of chronic pain and muscle injuries in most cases.

We put such huge emphasis on having good postures because movements begin and ends in postures. It is during a state of ideal postures alignments that allow optimal functioning of all body systems.

Ideal posture is that state of muscular and skeletal balance which protects the supporting structures of the body against injury or progressive deformity.

As a dowel rod is placed on our back, it should remain 3 points of contact with our body which are the head, mid back, and sacrum. The two spaces in between these 3 points are our spinal curvatures. Perfect spinal alignment should allow us to fit the two spaces perfectly with not others, but our own knuckles. This is important because ideal spinal alignments lead to proper postures.

Maintaining that perfect 3 points of contact with a dowel rod while exercising trains our muscles to remember what ideal posture feels like. During the time of using a dowel rod, it slowly connects the brain and the body to deeply memorize the position the body should be in when the dowel rod is gone. It is like a re-programming to the muscular and nervous systems.

Posture alignment is the key evaluation method because it never lies!
